Wilma "Jean" Pokorney

June 19, 1941 — March 31, 2016

Ms. Wilma Jean “Mabel” Waldrop Pokorney, age 74, of Columbia, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at NHC Columbia.

Jean was born June 19, 1941 in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Robert Jack Waldrop and Omie Louise Watts Waldrop. Jean loved everyone and spending time with others, especially her children and grandchildren. Jean worked at Thomas Food Market in Mt. Pleasant for 26 years and at Maury Regional Medical Center. Jean enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, gardening, and her coffee. Jean was affectionately known as Mabel, a name given to her by her son-in-law Donnie, Grannyma and Big Mama to her grandchildren. She was a faithful, devoted Christian and was a member of Spencer Hill Church of Christ. Jean’s smile will be cherished, because she never lost it during her illness and everything she endured.

Survivors include her children, Natalie Lanier (Kerry) Soule, Lisa Lanier (Donnie) Barnett, Troy Lanier, Charles Pokorney; grandchildren, Misty (Zac) Dailey, Julie Roberts, Justin Staggs, Jesse Staggs, Shana Bratton, MaryBeth Barnett, Samantha Barnett, Tiffany Lanier, Amber (Randy) Pippin, Cody Pokorney and Cory Pokorney; and her 21 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law: Helga Waldrop.

Jean is preceded in death by her beloved parents and her brother, Harold Dean Waldrop. Knowing that Jean is reunited in Heaven with those she loved so dearly, the family finds comfort in the scripture, “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revalation 21:4

The family will visit with friends Friday, April 1, 2016 from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Williams Funeral Home with Randy McNeece and Jeff Waldrop. Burial will follow at Spencer Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Donnie Barnett, Justin Staggs, James Waldrop, Zac Dailey, Virgil Stewart, and Bobby Sims.

Jean’s children would like to thank the staff of NHC Columbia for their excellent care. Each caregiver provided compassionate care and Jean quickly became “Mama” to all of them. The care given to Jean allowed the family great comfort knowing she was in great hands at all times.
