William H. "Willie" Boyd

February 29, 1940 — March 30, 2006

Mr. William H. ?Willie? Boyd, 66, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and public servant, went to be with the lord on March 30, 2006.

A celebration of life service for Mr. Boyd will be conducted Sunday, April 2, 2006 at 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant with Reverend Elmer Crosby and Reverend Frank Webb officiating. Burial will be in the Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 pm and Saturday from 3:00 to 9:00 pm at the Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.

Willie was born in Maury County on February 29, 1940.He was the son of the late Harold M. and Louise Barnett Boyd and husband of Sue Chapman Boyd. He grew up in Mt. Pleasant and was a graduate of the old Hay Long High School. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant for 60 years. He was a deacon in the church, presently serving on the Building Committee and loved his church and church family. He was a devoted public servant, serving for the city of Mt. Pleasant on the City Council for 31 years and was presently the mayor, a position he has held for 21 years. He received the Judge Ed Workman award in 2005 for outstanding leadership to the community of Mt. Pleasant. He was involved with the Mt. Pleasant Loins Club for 38 years and former president of the Mt. Pleasant Parent-Teachers Association. He was an avid supporter of Mt. Pleasant sports, a former little league coach and sponsored teams throughout the years. He was devoted to Mt. Pleasant Basketball and never missed the opportunity to support the team coached by his son, Derek. Willie served his country during the Vietnam War as an Honor Guard at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. He was presently employed as a sales representative for Mt. Pleasant Transfer and former owner of Boyd?s Food Town. He was one of the founding members of the Junior Order of the United American Mechanics Council #256.

He is survived by his beautiful wife of 44 years, Rebecca Sue Chapman Boyd; three wonderful sons, William Derek Helen Boyd, Markham Lance Tiffany Boyd and Destry Miller Boyd, all of Mt. Pleasant; his loving grandchildren, Morgan Breanna Boyd, Markham Lance Boyd Jr., Mathin Jarrett Boyd, Samuel Christian Boyd and Claire Elise Boyd, all of Mt. Pleasant; sister, Shirley Ernesto Cube of Radford, VA; brothers, Charles A. Ruby Boyd, David Linda Boyd and Donald Carol Boyd, all of Mt. Pleasant; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be employees of the city of Mt. Pleasant, employees of Mt. Pleasant Transfer and the deacons of First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant.

In honor of Willie?s life as a public servant, the family request that you show your support by being actively involved in your community. Willie always wanted the community of Mt. Pleasant to be a place where you could work, live and play.
