Mr. William (Poppa) Scharrer, age 79, of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at Maury Regional Medical Center.
William was born on December 30, 1936 to Chris Scharrer and Geraldine McClure Scharrer in Mt. Morris, Michigan. He was a veteran of the US Navy. William married the love of his life, Jean Ann Parson on September 9, 1961 and they built a wonderful family together until her passing on April 22, 2008. He was a retiree from Monsanto.
William was beloved by all his family, and perhaps because he loved them so much and showed it by the fact that he would do anything for them. Being together was one of his favorite things, along with watching his grandkids play sports. It seems that everyone who met him loved him and welcomed him into their own families and called him, “Poppa”. He always had a smile on his face and a sense of humor that will be cherished and missed. He loved sports and coached Farm League and Little League in the 70’s and 80’s. He also loved craftwork. He was of the Baptist faith.
Poppa was a man from a simpler time; he was a man of his word, his handshake meant something, and when he believed something, he believed it with all that he had in him. Maybe more of us should strive to be this kind of person.
William is survived by his children: Wayne (Tammy) Scharrer and Julie (Philip) Luman; daughter-in-law: Kathy Scharrer; grandchildren: Andrew Scharrer, Whitney (Charles Hodge) Scharrer, Katelyn Scharrer, Kurtis Scharrer and Konner Scharrer; great-granddaughter: Lily Scharrer; brother: Don (Barbara) Reid; numerous nieces and nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, great grand-nieces and great grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: Chris and Geraldine Scharrer; beloved wife: Jean Scharrer; son: Billy Scharrer and daughter: Charlene Scharrer.
