William Edwin Pontow, age 87, passed away May 3, 2014, in his home surrounded by his family. William was a long time resident of Mt. Pleasant, TN.
William was born January 24, 1927 in Chicago, IL to the late Edwin William Pontow and Ruth Rottman. Shortly after finishing high school William went to fight for his country in the United States Navy during World War II. Recently he published a book about his experiences during the war entitled “Pride and Perils of a Young Amphibian.” He is a retired fire protection engineer. He enjoyed seeing is many friends each morning at Bucky’s here in Columbia. He attended St. Catherine’s Catholic Church.
The family will receive friends at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, Tuesday May 6th from 4 to 8 p.m. The service will be announced at a later date, it will be held in Hammond, Indiana.
William is survived by his son David (Kathy) Pontow of Mt. Pleasant; One sister: Ruth Hierl; Four grandchildren: Erin (Don) LaVette, Sean (Jennifer) Pontow, Megan (Josh) McNeal and Dan Pontow; Seven great-grandchildren: Donnie & Bella LaVette, Daniel & Logan Pontow, and Shelby, Lanie & Katelyn McNeal. William was preceded in death by his grandson, Dan Pontow, as well as his great grand daughter Katelyn McNeal, his loving wife Shirley Hough Pontow, his sister Delores Osmondson, and brother Warren Pontow.
