William R. Hood

December 22, 1939 — December 20, 2024

Columbia

William "Bill" Russell Hood, aged 84, peacefully departed this life on December 20, 2024, at NHC Maury Transitional Care in Columbia, Tennessee, just two days shy of his 85th birthday. Born on December 22, 1939, in Lawrence County, Tennessee, Bill was the cherished son of the late William Jackson Hood and Annie Mae Woods.

From a young age, Bill exemplified a steadfast sense of duty and determination. At the tender age of 17, he answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the National Guard with the blessing of his parents. This commitment marked the beginning of a remarkable 35-year military career, during which he pursued education, achieved numerous milestones, and embodied the virtues of service and discipline.

Bill's life took a joyful turn when he met the love of his life, Helen Ruth Sandlin, while roller skating—a serendipitous encounter that revealed him to be her "knight in shining armor." Their love blossomed into a nearly 63-year union filled with unwavering devotion and shared dreams. Together, they established a warm and enduring presence in the Columbia community, forming deep and lasting friendships.

A man of industrious spirit, Bill and Helen built a successful clothing textile company, a testament to their shared ambition and teamwork. Later, Bill applied his expertise as a Maintenance Supervisor at Essex in Franklin, dedicating 15 years to his work. Retirement did not signify rest for Bill; instead, he embraced a new role at his son’s business, Affordable Welding & Fabrication in Spring Hill. For over two decades, he served as the affable and steadfast shop owner, whose welcoming demeanor and kind words left an indelible mark on both customers and colleagues.

Bill was a man of simple yet profound joys. He found solace and camaraderie in fishing and hunting with his loved ones, cherishing the crisp dawns and soft laughter that defined these moments. His warmth, wisdom, and steady presence were the anchors of his family and community.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories, survived by his devoted wife, Helen Hood; his beloved children, Timothy Russell (Debra) Hood and Stacey (Jerry) Staggs; and his treasured grandchildren, Cassie Ramsey, Breanna (Andrew) Daniel, Thomas Hood, Jackson Hood, Carson (Reinaldo) Hood. His legacy will live on with his great-grandchildren: Saylor Jo, Malachi Daniel, Marlee, Keenan, and Leo Roman.

As we mourn Bill’s passing, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life of unwavering love, service, and connection. He will be profoundly missed and fondly remembered by all who were fortunate to know him.
