William Gordon Holder, a member of the Arlington, Virginia community, peacefully passed away on February 7, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, intellect, and devotion. Born on October 27, 1940, in Columbia, Tennessee, William was the beloved son of the late Elmer Holder and Myrtle Carpenter Holder.
William's journey began in Columbia, where he attended Columbia Central High School, graduating with the class of 1959. After completing his education, he embarked on a distinguished career with the Library of Congress, where his passion for literature and dedication to knowledge flourished. For over three decades, William served with diligence and commitment until his well-earned retirement in 1992. He was a member of the Church of Christ Community. He was a long time member of Highland Avenue Church of Christ.
Outside of his professional life, William found solace and joy in the simple pleasures of reading books and attending Broadway shows. His love for literature and the arts enriched his life and touched the lives of those around him.
William's memory will forever be cherished by his surviving loved ones, including his sister Sally Moore and her husband Howard Moore, his nephew Jeremy Haywood, his niece Angela Haywood, and his sister-in-law Reva Holder; great nephews: Will Carr and Jordan Haywood; and great nieces: Laren Carr, Brittany Haywood, and Makenna Haywood.
While William's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, his spirit will live on through the countless memories shared and the lives he touched with his warmth and wisdom.
In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his brother Freeman Holder and his grandparents JH Carpenter, Inez Carpenter, Jeff Holder, and Sallie Holder.
Pallbearers will be Howard Moore, Jeremy Haywood, Will Carr, Jordan Haywood, Bobby Joe Haywood, and Matthew Mullican.
Private burial will be held today at Polk Memorial Gardens for immediate family.
