Mr. William “Bill” Smith Chaffin, age 90, of Columbia, Tennessee passed away on Monday, March 14, 2016 at Maury Regional Medical Center.
Bill was born on October 17, 1925 in Florence, Alabama to Cecil S. Chaffin and Ethridge Johnston Chaffin. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a retiree of the US Post Office and well known in the community. Following his record of dedicated service to his country and his profession, he was also dedicated to his Lord and his church family. This was demonstrated by his commitment to serving as church treasurer as well as thirty-six years of perfect attendance at First United Methodist Church.
He was married to Emily Louise Goad Chaffin who passed away on December 5, 2009. They enjoyed traveling together before she passed away. Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman and had a great love of the outdoors. He was an Honorary Lifetime Member of the VFW.
Bill is survived by his stepsons: Steve (Tammy) Derryberry of Lewisburg, Tennessee and Andy Derryberry of Michigan; grandsons: Lee (Lori) Derryberry, Tanner Derryberry, Daryl Hanvy and Bryan Derryberry; granddaughters: Wendy Williams and Jana Tyler; great-grandson: Nathan Derryberry; and great-granddaughters: Madison Derryberry. He was preceded in death by his wife: Louise Chaffin; parents: Cecil and Ethridge Chaffin; brother: Howard Chaffin and step-daughter: Sharon Derryberry Tyler.
Funeral services for Mr. Chaffin will be held on Thursday, March 17, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Rev. Frank Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Arlington Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee with military honors being provided by the American Legion Herbert Griffin Post 19. The family will visit with friends on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. also at the funeral home.
Lee Derryberry, Tanner Derryberry, Daryl Hanvy, Nathan Derryberry, Guy Derryberry and Travis Howell will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Pharis, Members of the Maury County Gun Club, Past and Present Members of the First United Methodist Church, Members of the VFW.
