Wallace Stephen Gordon

Mr. Wallace Stephen Shoeshine Man Gordon, age 95, a resident of Columbia, passed away Thursday, April 19, 2007 at Columbia Care and Rehab Center.

Services for Mr. Gordon will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Rev. Jimmy Smith, Rick Points and Chief Deputy Ashley Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.

The family will visit with friends on Saturday from 12:00 Noon until service time at 2:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

A native of Maury County, Wallace was the son of the late Willie and Grace Lawrence Gordon. He was the husband of 44 years of Susie Timmons Gordon, who preceded him in death in 1987. He loved his church, the Mt. Tabor-Salem United Presbyterian Church and served the church as treasurer for a number of years.

Wallace began his career as a porter for the old Bethel Hotel and then as custodian at Columbia Military Academy and the Maury Co. School System. He also served as a porter on the railroad. He found his true calling when he began shining shoes at Brown s Barber Shop on the Square. Mr. Brown, father of Maury Co. Chief Deputy Ashley Brown, gave him his famous sturdy oak ladder back chair. In 1992 he became the Shoeshine Man at Royal s Hair Fashions on South Main Street and continued his work there until his retirement.

Wallace was also instrumental in establishing the Big Brothers-Big Sisters program in Maury County in 1976.

Mr. Gordon s survivors include one step-daughter: Margaret Davis of Detroit, MI; two sisters: Mary Frances Pillow of Columbia and Ann McPhearson of North Carolina; two brothers: Horace Gordon of Columbia and Lewis Gordon of Chicago; his beloved friends who he called his Angels at Royal s Hair Fashions: Frances Dickson, Lori Stockard, Kaye Cheek and Connie Roberts; five step-grandchildren and a very special friend: Ashley Brown of Columbia. He was preceded in death by two brothers: William Gordon in 1946 and Douglas Gordon in 2007.

Pallbearers will be George Eslinger, Ashley Brown, Bobby McIver, Granville Pillow, Burt Smith, Bobby Sands and Leon Ogilvie.

Memorial donations may be made to Mr. Gordon s church, the Mt. Tabor-Salem United Presbyterian Church, 516 Mooresville Pike, Columbia, TN 38401.
