Verna Claire Henderson King, age 90, passed away on Friday, June 10, 2016 at her residence. She was born in the Southport community on June 5, 1926 to the late William Gordon and Eugenia Haley Henderson.
Mrs. King worshiped with Bethel Church of Christ during her early years but has been worshipping with West 7th St. Church of Christ since 1996. In February of 1948, Verna married James Edward King, who passed away in November of 2010. A graduate of Columbia Central High School, class of 1945 then attended Columbia Business College. Her working career began at Union Carbide and then retired from Stauffer Chemical in 1986.
Verna is survived by her two sons, James Edward King, Jr. of Columbia, and Kenneth (Kim) Wayne King of Columbia; Two Granddaughters, Tiffany (Terry) King Roland and Ashley King; Three Grandsons, Kenneth (Beth) Wayne King, Jr., Tyson King, and Jarrett King; One Step-Grandson, Mason Dabbs; Three great grandsons and four great granddaughters; Sister, Sara Ann Henderson Gibson; Four sister-in-laws, Ina Ruth King, Sue King Cathey, Charlene King Parsons and Linda King Cochran; and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Eugenia Henderson, and her husband, James Edward King.
The family will visit with friends on Monday, June 13, 2016 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia. Services will be conducted on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at 10:00 AM at the funeral home with Bro. John Law officiating. Burial will follow at Arlington Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jarrett King, Tyson King, Mason Dabbs, Wayne King, and Terry Roland. The past and current member of West 7th St. Church of Christ will serve as honorary pallbearers.
