Thelma Elizabeth "Burns" Dial

Thelma Elizabeth “Burns” Dial, age 87, a resident of Brookdale Sterling House, passed away on Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at NHC Hillview in Columbia, Tennessee.

Thelma was born August 31, 1927 in Maury County, Tennessee to the late Walter Claude Burns and the late Janie Adkison Burns. She married Andrew Jackson Comer Dial and they shared a wonderful life together until his passing in May 1991. Thelma taught in a one room schoolhouse and taught all twelve grades. She taught at Johnson Chapel, Elmore, and Bethel schools. Her hobbies included sewing and quilting. Thelma was a member of Hilltown Nazarene Church.

The family will visit with friends on Friday, April 10, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, Tennessee with Rev. James Lunsford and Rev. Howard Alexander officiating. Burial will follow at Adkison Cemetery at Hilltown.

Thelma is survived by sons Andrew Lee (Dorothy) Dial of Santa Fe and Walter Dean (Donna) Dial of Columbia; daughter Lilly Annette (Kenny) Johnson of Texas; brother Charles Burns of Santa Fe; sisters-in-law Hazel Burns Adair of Lawrenceburg and Joyce Dial of Clarksville; grandsons Scotty (Lisa) Dial of Columbia, Eric (Lauren) Dial of Columbia, and Paul Daniel (Ginia) Johnson of Texas; granddaughters Emily (David) Hodges of Texas and Angela Smith of Santa Fe; great-granddaughters Shelby Dial of Columbia, Kaitlin Boyd of Santa Fe, and Sage Johnson of Texas; and great-grandson Brayden Smith of Santa Fe.

She was preceded in death by her brother Elmer Burns, brother-in-law Roy Dial, special friend Leonard Potts, and Rocky.

Pallbearers will be Scotty Dial, Eric Dial, Brayden Smith, Charles Lynn Burns, Bernard Burns, and J.W. Slaughter.

Honorary Pallbearers will be the children she taught in school, Don and Alma Sisk, the staff and friends at Brookdale Sterling House, Dr. John Simmons, and Dr. James Weisman.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Adkison Cemetery c/o Libby Luther, 2332 Author Hutcherson Road, Columbia, Tennessee 38401.
