Suzanne Meyers Lege, age 93, of Columbia, TN passed away of natural causes on May 26, 2020 in the loving care of her family.
Suzanne (Sue, Suzy Q, Grandma, Mimi) was born on March 18, 1927 in Oak Park, Illinois. She leaves this earth to join her parents, Harry and Ada Meyers, and older sister, Christina Meyers, in Heaven. Suzanne is survived by her devoted husband of 69 years, Edward Lege, Jr. (Retired Air Force); and her 5 children: Christina Lege-Ballentine and husband Michael J. Ballentine of Columbia TN; Edward Allan Lege of Destin, FL; Michael J. Lege and wife Valerie F. Lege of Elkton, FL; Peter A. Lege of Kauai, HI; and Carol A. Picon and husband Manuel A. Picon of Tokyo, Japan.
In Columbia, Suzanne was a dedicated member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, enjoying many special friendships over the past 15 years. Having moved with her husband to Columbia after retirement from Valparaiso, FL, she enjoyed traveling and spending time with her children, 6 grandchildren (Lindsay G. Lege, Valerie Lege, Daniel Lege, Lauren Lege, Elena Picon, and Samuel Picon) and 5 great-grandchildren (Ayden Hardison, Juliet and Lily Lege, Kirra and Kalan Chandler).
Suzanne was a lifelong educator, teaching elementary school education (Kindergarten and 1st Grade) for 30 years. She had a special warmth, compassion, and a creative, no-nonsense style of teaching. She touched the hearts and minds of hundreds of young children. She dedicated countless hours outside of her classroom preparing engaging curriculums, individualized lessons, and fun art projects. It was no surprise, when every year "Mrs. Lege's" class had a wait list from parents requesting her to teach their children.
If singing once is praying twice, then Suzanne was in constant communication with her Lord. During her entire adult life, she served as a liturgical musician for Catholic parishes on the many Air Force Bases where she and her family resided. Suzanne was the parish organist/pianist at these base chapels and played for hundreds of weddings, Masses, and funerals. Her love for music and gift as an organist/pianist continues in her children and grandchildren as they sing in choirs and play instruments.
As a Military Spouse, Suzanne steadfastly navigated the challenging tasks of multiple cross country moves, raising children as a single parent with a spouse at war, making and leaving friends, managing a household, and the art of reinvention.
Suzanne was a skilled homemaker and handcrafter ... there's no recipe or art genre she hasn't tried and excelled in. Over her lifetime, her friends and family have been blessed with many special gifts of things she's hand made, created, cooked and baked.
Her sharp intellect made her a crossword puzzle and Scrabble whiz. Suzanne was always up for a card game, board game, game of wit or engaging conversation or debate.
Suzanne was a graduate from the University of Arizona, class of 1949 and a member of the Beta Zeta chapter of the Chi Omega Sorority. She was best known in college for having penned "Scribblings by Susie" a regular humorist column for the campus newspaper.
The family welcomes friends of Suzanne to a visitation and Bereavement Service at Williams Funeral Home, 2517 Trotwood Avenue, Columbia TN on May 29, 2020 from 4PM to 7PM. She will be laid to rest at Polk Memorial Gardens immediately following a Funeral Mass at St. Catherine's Catholic Church on May 30, 2020 at 11:00 am.
The family would especially like to thank Kathy Adkins for her generous support, kind attention, and loving compassion as she helped with their mother's care over the past 10 months. Heartfelt appreciation to the many aides and nurses from Caris Hospice who lovingly tended to Suzanne.
