Virginia Sue McClain Greenfield left this earth on February 14, 2025, after a life full of love and service. A fourth-generation native of Maury County, Sue was born on February 2, 1941, at King’s Daughters Hospital in Columbia, TN to Annie Lee and William Rex McClain.
She had a strong faith in God and was taught to always help others by her wonderful parents. She embarked on a career as an educator after graduating from Hay Long High School, obtaining a Master’s degree from George Peabody College at Vanderbilt University, and later earning an Educational Specialist Degree from Tennessee Technological University. Her teaching tenure spanned almost 45 years and included Franklin High School, Columbia Central High School, Volunteer State Community College, and Columbia State Community College where she spent almost 30 years as an Associate Professor in the Business Department.
Sue was involved in many organizations including Maury County Retired Teachers, Maury County Public School Board Member, Maury Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, Leadership Maury, ADK Teacher’s Sorority, Columbia Women’s Business and Professional Club, the Wagon Wheelers Square Dance Group, the Cosmopolitan Book Club, the Wednesday and Friday Bridge groups at Greymere Country Club, and the Mah-Jongg ladies. She was a proud founding member of Maury County Students in Crisis and worked tirelessly to promote this cause.
As a long time member of First United Methodist Church in Columbia, she enjoyed teaching Sunday School, participating as a lay speaker, and serving on many committees.
In addition to her parents, Sue was predeceased by her husband of 58 years David Greenfield and son Rex Greenfield. Survivors include her daughter Cathy( Tom) Matyskiela and daughter-n-law Kris Greenfield; grandchildren Tyler Matyskiela of Florence, AL, Corey (Kassie) Matyskiela of Clarkesville, TN and Ali Shelton of Mount Pleasant, TN; great grandsons, Liam Matyskiela and Paxton Matyskiela of Clarkesville, TN and her furry friend, Mackie , who provided much companionship. Additionally, she was blessed with the most loving caregivers Valerie Gant, Denise Gant, Tracey Cozey, and Jackie Davis. The family would like to thank the caregivers for such wonderful care.
The family will visit with friends at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, TN on Friday, February 21 from 10 am -12 pm with the service beginning at noon at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, TN with her cousin, Rev. Jimmy Peyton, performing the ceremony. Pallbearers are RayMcCain, Mark McCain, Steve McCain, Ricky Massey, Tyler Matyskiela and Corey Matyskiela. Honorary pallbearers include members of the Bruce Strother Sunday School Class, Dr. Rebecca Hawkins, The Cosmopolitan Book Club members, the Mah-Jongg Group , the Bridge Club ladies and the Logan Drive ladies.
Memorials in Sue’s memory may be made to Maury County Students in Crisis, 222 West 7th Street, Columbia, TN or to First United Methodist Church, 222 West 7th Street.
