Sherri Denise Phelps Proctor, 49, of Columbia died on Tuesday, September 25, 2012, at Maury Regional Hospital after a six-year battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband Mark, 49, her daughter Meagan Proctor Kavouras, 23, son Grayson, 21, and daughter Madison, 14.
In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by her parents, Gene and Mary Ella Phelps of Thornton, Texas, sister Kari Lee of Elmhurst, Illinois, brother David Phelps, of Culleoka, Tennessee, and a host of loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. In addition to her grandparents, she is preceded in death by her father-in-law, Amon Proctor, and one nephew, Dustin Proctor.
Sherri was born in Waco, Texas, on June 20, 1963. She grew up in Duncanville, Texas, and Houston, Texas, before returning to Waco to attend Baylor University where she majored in early childhood education and served as the chaplain for Delta Delta Delta sorority.
Sherri and Mark were married in Tomball, Texas, on July 27, 1985 before moving to Lubbock, Texas, where she began her career as an elementary school teacher in the Lubbock Independent School District. She worked for LISD until she and Mark moved to Dallas in 1987 where she attended graduate school at the University of North Texas.
Throughout her life, Sherri homeschooled all three of her children and served as a church worship-leader. She owned and operated The Blue Planet Group, an artist booking and management agency and was an accomplished vocalist and studio musician with a number of recordings to her credit. The cherished pinnacle of her music career was a 15-year tenure singing world-wide with her brother, Nashville-based tenor David Phelps.
The family will receive guests Friday September 28 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the main sanctuary of Pleasant Heights Baptist Church in Columbia. A memorial service will be held at the same location on Saturday, September 29, 2012, at 6 p.m. Private graveside services for the family will be held in the Arbors at Polk Memorial Gardens in Columbia. Memorials may be made to the Sanctuary Renovation Fund of Highland Park Baptist Church, 1800 Highland Avenue, Columbia, TN, 38401.
