Salvador V. Avila was born May 9, 1951 in Leon GTO, Mexico, the son of Raquel Velez Avila of Mexico and the late Salvador Avila. On May 6, 1978, Sal married Elba G. Rubio and together they reared a son and daughter who were the joy of their lives.
Sal was one of the most dedicated General Motors employees and very loyal to the UAW. He was a welder by trade, working on the door line in vehicle systems and had welded tugboats for the U.S. Navy. Sal has a wonderful sense of humor and absolutely loved the Dodgers, Raiders, UCLA Bruins and was an avid NASCAR enthusiast, having a life-sized poster of Jeff Gordon in his possession. He was well known among his friends for his famous barbecues and his love of gardening. Sal enjoyed all forms of politics and watching MSNBC. He was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church. The family shared that his laugh was contagious, and it was something you could recognize anywhere.
Along with his dear wife and mother, Sal is survived by his children, Natalie Dione Martin-Frierson and Salvador Avila, both of Columbia; his grandchildren, Roderick Emilio Martin-Frierson, Nathanial Slade Martin-Frierson and Christopher Earl Martin-Frierson; siblings, Alma Celia Avila, Jorge Velez, Mario Avila, Sergio Avila and Luis Avila along with several nieces and nephews. One of Sal's very special family members, his aunt, whom he loved like a mother, Luz Esperanza Solache of California, also survives along with Mike Rollins, whom Elba referred to as Sal's "second wife."! Sal was a godfather to many children, in particular one whom he loved like his daughter, Maria Valdez and her daughters, Marcy, Victoria, Elizabeth and Cassandra. In addition to his father, Sal was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Avila.
Funeral services for Sal will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Father Davis Chackaleckel officiating. The family will visit with friends on Tuesday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M., with a Rosary at 7:00 P.M. One of Sal's wishes was for everyone to wear Hawaiian clothing or clothing celebrating the sports teams he loved for his funeral service.
The entire Avila family would to extend their deepest appreciation to Hospice Compassus, especially to Jackie, Paula, Brandy, Susan and Marilyn, for their compassionate care of Sal.
