Roy “Glenn” Lumpkins age 79, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 4, 2023, at NHC Maury after battling a brief illness. Born May 16, 1943, and raised in Lawrenceburg, TN, Glenn was a long-time resident of Mt. Pleasant where he served the community for 50 plus years as a pharmacist. Many of those years were spent at Wright’s Pharmacy, the drugstore he owned and operated for more than 30 years. He also worked for Rite Aid, Maury Regional Medical Center, and Compound RX center later in his pharmaceutical career. He later turned the building, once occupied by Wright’s Pharmacy, on the corner of the Mt. Pleasant square into Lumpy’s Malt Shop, a 50s diner, to maintain the social aspect of the original soda fountain where townspeople loved to gather. The malt shop still remains, under new ownership called the Mt. Pleasant Grille.
The son of the late Herbert Neil Lumpkins and the late Mary Ivadell Lumpkins Sutton, Glenn was the son of an electrician (father) who served in WW II and a seamstress (mother) who was widowed in 1952 and later remarried the late Hobert Sutton.
Glenn graduated Lawrence County High School in 1961. He served his country as a US Army combat field medic where he was stationed in Heidelberg, Germany where he met his wife of 59 years, Pearl Marie Lumpkins. After his enlistment, he attended pharmacy school at Washington University in St. Louis, MO, graduating with his doctorate in pharmacy in 1969.
He is survived by his wife Pearl, daughters Deborah (Dani Hawker) Lumpkins, Julie (Steven) Basler, two granddaughters, Hannah and Avery Basler, and many nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents and siblings, Martha Neil Houchens (Florida) and John M. Lumpkins (North Carolina).
He was a long-time member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Columbia, TN. Charter Member of Knights of Columbus, in Maury County. In lieu of flowers, monetary donations made be made to the Maury Regional Foundation Special Needs Fund in support of vulnerable populations who are unable to afford lifesaving medications.
The family will visit with friends Saturday, May 6, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, TN. Funeral services for Glenn will be held Sunday, May 7, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Deacon Ray Siebold officiating. Burial will follow at Polk Memorial Gardens.
