Robert Harold Morgan was born September 23, 1921 in Kipton, OH, the son of the late Earl Morgan and Margaret Lewis Morgan. He passed away at the age of 90 on September 4, 2012 at Maury Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Morgan leaves behind one son, Paul W. (Evelyn) Morgan, Sr., of Hampshire, 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Robert entered the Army in July, 1943 and took basic training at El Paso TX, five months ordinance automotive school at Omaha, NE. He was ordered back to El Paso, TX, where they pulled six men out of ranks to attend Heave automotive armament detachment to the motor pool. By Robert being pulled out of ranks with that day he missed Normandy D + 2.
His overseas duty included 3228 Ordinance Depot Company, going to Munchon Gladbeck, Germany, back to Marca, France, six weeks in Durham, Germany – camp lucky Strikes at bivouac waiting to board the freighter to depart to the Philippines. One day past the Rock of Gibraltar, it was 10:00 p.m. lights out when the PA system came on – “This is your commander, the Captain of this ship. Word has just been received that the war with Japan has just ended.”
Robert and everyone went above deck where they fired a 21 gun salute. At 2:00 A.M. everyone was ordered below deck. The PA system came one again, “This is your commander, the Captain of this ship. The destination has been changed to Boston. Eight days later they landed at Boston Harbor. He served 2 years 7 months in WW II.
He later moved his family to Florida in 1955 where he became town Marshall, later town Fire Chief. He then retired to Tennessee after serving 23 years for Palm Beach County Juvenile Court as Superintendent of the children’s home.
Mr. Robert Harold Morgan leaves a legacy that will be told for generations to come. He will never be forgotten.
The family will visit with friends on Wednesday from 2:00 – 6:00 P.M. at Williams Funeral Home, 109 Blythewood Dr., Columbia. Inurnment will be Saturday at 2:00 P.M. in the niche wall of the chapel mausoleum at Polk Memorial Gardens with Rev. Rock Jaggers officiating.
