Mr. Richard E. Jewell, age 91, a resident of Gray Circle in Columbia, passed away on Saturday, October 4, 2008, at Maury Regional Hospital.
Funeral services for Mr. Jewell will be conducted Wednesday at 3:00 P.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Bro. John R. Vaughan officiating. Burial will follow in the Stand Cemetery in Hickman Co.
The family will visit with friends on Tuesday from 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
The Hickman County native was the son of the late Richard S. Jewell and Janie Alderson Jewell. He was the husband of 60 years of Sara Herbert Jewell of Columbia. Mr. Jewell was a long time resident of Columbia and was the former owner of Tennessee Valley Meats. During WW II, he helped build the Alcon Highway in Alaska. He was a charter member of the Graymere Church of Christ and was a 57 year member of the Columbia Elks Lodge #686.
Survivors in addition to his wife include two sons: Richard Jennie Grace Jewell, Jr., and John Margie Jewell, both of Columbia; grandchildren: John C. Jewell, Jenny J. Shaw, Elizabeth J. Freixo and R. Smith Jewell and two great-grandchildren: Kaylee Osborne and Olivia Shaw. In addition to his parents, Mr. Jewell was preceded in death by two sisters: Elizabeth Jewell Baker and Beatrice Jewell and one brother: J.B. Jewell.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Bennett, Donnie Whitaker, Tommy Herbert, Bobby Herbert, George Herbert, Billy Butler, Smith Jewell, John Charles Jewell and Perry England. Honorary pallbearers will be past and present employees of Tennessee Valley Meats, members of the Columbia Elks Lodge #686 and his many friends and neighbors.
