Raymond "Blackie" Brewer

October 4, 1933 — May 13, 2014

Raymond “Blackie” Brewer, age 80, passed away at his residence in Mt. Pleasant surrounded by his loving family.

Blackie, as he was most commonly known, was born to the late George Washington and Carrie Laura McClain Brewer. He was the husband of Betty Joan Derryberry Brewer. After graduating from Hay Long High School Graduate Class of 1952, Blackie went to work at Astra Zenica, where he retired after 42 years. He was a former Troop Leader in the Boy Scouts of America, and a member of First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant. Most importantly, Blackie was a family man that loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. At the end of his conversations, he would always leave you with a smile.

In addition to his loving wife of 61 years, Joan Derryberry Brewer, he is survived by his children, Melinda (Jerry) Sands of Mt. Pleasant, Raymond Michael (Jean) Brewer of Spring Hill; Melody Haywood of Mt. Pleasant; grandsons, Wes (Tiffani) Sands, Travis Michael (Leslie) Brewer; granddaughters, Morgan Michelle Brewer, Lindsay (Brad) Haywood Hargrove and Jessica Rae Haywood; great granddaughters, Lillie and Lindley Sands; one sister, Mary Sue Hooper; several nieces and nephews. Mr. Brewer is preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, J. D. Brewer, twin brother Waymond “Bill” Brewer, Ted Brewer, Nenie Henson, Herman Brewer, Annie Brewer and Inis Brewer.

The family will gather with friends on Thursday, May 15 from 4:30-8:30 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Funeral services will also be conducted at the funeral home Friday, May 16, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Bro. Jay Christian and Bro. Frank Webb officiating. Burial will follow at Polk Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Wes Sands, Travis Brewer, Tim Brewer, Terry Brewer, Rick Brewer, Curtis Haywood, David Henson, Brad Hargrove and Jerry Hooper. Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Rail, former members of the maintenance department at Astra Zenica and his Classmates of Hay Long High School class of 1952.
