Rachel S. Gilliam

April 10, 1923 — June 20, 2015

Rachel S. Gilliam, age 92, passed away on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at Life Care Center of Columbia.

Rachel was born on April 10, 1923 to the late Albert and Lilly Scott in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee. She married Joe Gilliam at the young age of eighteen. They spent the next six decades together. Rachel had a deep love for horses. As a small girl, she had a pony that she rode to school. Rachel and Joe started a farm together. The farm started from humble beginnings and worked hard and grew the farm together. She was an excellent cook and did a lot of canning on the farm. Rachel loved to travel to Florida and looked forward to it every year. She was a member of a local doll club. Rachel was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant.
The family will visit with friends on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant. Funeral services will immediately follow the visitation at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant with Don Kerce officiating. Burial will follow at Polk Memorial Gardens.

Rachel is survived by her daughter Melody (Marlon) Frizzell of Culleoka; grandsons Brandon Vincent of Summertown, Brishan Frizzel of Culleoka, and Elijah Frizzel of Culleoka; granddaughters Christia V. (Jason) Niedegeses of Lawrenceburg and Sunday Grace Frizzel of Culleoka; great-daughters Vincy Niedergeses of Lawrenceburg and Josie Niedergeses of Lawrenceburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Rachel was preceded in death by her son Tim Gilliam and brother Leland Scott.

Pallbearers will be Clay Gilliam, Roger Gilliam, Todd Gilliam, Frank Martin, Clark Scott, Brandon Vincent, and Scott Webster.

Honorary pallbearers will be Hendley Edwards, David Edwards, Ron Watkins, Evelyn Trousdale, Gail Kerce, Louise Jones, Sandra Hathcock, George R. Gilliam and Pat Hickman.

In lieu of flowers memorials contributions may be made to United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant Electrical Fund.
