Perry Pope Rogers

Perry Pope Rogers, age 89, of Columbia, passed away on Monday, February 18, 2019 at Maury Regional Medical Center, following an extended illness.

Perry was born on April 2, 1929, in Pulaski, Tennessee, to Vilas Rogers and Maggie Lou Pope Rogers. He graduated from Elkton High School in 1948. On September 11, 1950, he joined the
US Navy and served honorably until July 13, 1954. He was a machinist mate on the USS Hannah, a destroyer and traveled all over the world, including to Hawaii, Korea, Japan, China, Philippines, Guam and Australia, until his discharge on July 13, 1954.

He grew up as a member of Elkton Baptist Church, and his parents raised him in a Christian home. He was proud of that, and proud to carry on that tradition of faith, teaching his children and grandchildren about the Lord.

On August 14, 1954, he married Martha Dean Bland. They moved to Columbia, Tennessee in 1959, and had one child, Deborah Faye Rogers. Martha passed away on January 26, 1982. He later married Kathlene Bates. Kathlene brought a daughter, Lisa to the marriage. They shared seven grandchildren together. Perry coached church league softball and many years of American Little League Baseball, even though he didn’t have any sons of his own playing. However, he did get to enjoy coaching his grandsons. Perry served the Lord as a member of Northside Baptist Church, and was a member of the Ready Sunday School Class. He also had a strong and beautiful bass voice, and sung in a gospel quartet, called The Glorylanders, with his daughter. He was a purchasing agent for TVA until his retirement, after 27 years.

Perry is survived by his wife: Kathlene Henson Rogers; children: Debbie (Danny) Fogle and Lisa (Barry) Tidwell; grandchildren: Jason (Tayna) Fogle, Michael Fogle, Keven (Meredeth) Fogle, Max Tidwell, Wes Tidwell, Grayson Tidwell, and Kayla Bishop; great-grandchildren: Alex Fogle, Ellyson Fogle, Everett Hardison, and Maggie Fogle; brother-in-law: Bobby Bland; and sister-in-law: Barbara Rogers. He was preceded in death by his parents: Vilas and Maggie Rogers; first wife: Martha Dean Rogers; brother: Bruce Rogers; sister: Marie Hughes; and brother in law: Wayne Bland.

Funeral services for Perry will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, with Bro. Matt Travers officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, in Ardmore, Alabama, with the US Navy providing military honors. The family will visit with friends on Tuesday, February 19 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., also at the funeral home.

Jason Fogle, Michael Fogle, Kevin Fogle, Barry Tidwell, Max Tidwell, and Wes Tidwell will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Benefield, Teresa Pennington, Coffee Drinkers at Kathy’s Restaurant, Ready Sunday School Class at Northside Baptist Church, Dr. Thomas Dake, Al Stevens, and Compassus.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Northside Baptist Church Building Fund, 127 Theta Pike, Columbia, TN 38401.
