Norman R. Carpenter

July 18, 1918 — February 26, 2007

Mr. Norman R. Carpenter, age 88, a long time resident of Fleming Street, passed away on Monday, February 26, at Life Care Center.

Funeral services for Mr. Carpenter will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Rev. Gary Wedgewood officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens.

The family will visit with friends on Tuesday from 4:00 ? 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

The Maury County native was the son of the late David Anderson Carpenter and Anna Campbell Carpenter. He was the husband of Lucille King Carpenter who survives. He was an Army Veteran of WW II and a member of Riverside United Methodist church. Mr. Carpenter had been employed at Tennessee Knitting Mills, as a car dealer and a courier for First Farmers and Merchants Bank. He had served as vice mayor of the City of Columbia for 12 years and a councilman for the fifth ward for 2 years. He was a member for over 50 years of the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19.

Survivors in addition to his wife include one sister: Christine Carpenter Pigg of Franklin; one brother: Shelby Sara Carpenter of Columbia; nieces and nephew: Patti Kent Freeman of Franklin, Claire Tommy Vann of Columbia and David Diane Carpenter of Spring Hill; great-nephews: Will Freeman, Shelby Carpenter, Spencer Carpenter, Hunter Vann and Scott Vann. He was preceded in death by one brother-in-law: Paul Pigg.

Pallbearers will be David Carpenter, Shelby Carpenter, Spencer Carpenter, Tommy Vann, Hunter Vann, Scott Vann, Kent Freeman, Will Freeman, Tommy Carpenter, Jr., Tom Grimsley, Morris Johnson and Billy Ray Campbell.

Honorary pallbearers will be Leroy Hill, Ed Holton, Mayor Bill Getner, Athel Hickman, Betty & Joe Modrall, Phoebe Hardison, Wayne Hickman, Mayor Jim Bailey, Charles Edward King, John and Loretta Goodloe, Dotsy Hight, Joe Cagel, Louise and Cleo Long, Jim Matthews, Richard Matthews, Jerry Kennedy, Billy Kennedy, Wayne Kennedy, James McNeely, Bobby Jacobs, Paul Butt, David Wise, Tom McGrew, James Burt, Carolyn Potts and Revis Harris.
