Murray Elison Hines, Sr.

Mr. Murray Elison Hines, Sr., age 77, a resident of Williams Hollow Road in Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Sunday, July 20,
at his residence
.
A Celebration of Life service for Mr. Hines will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Randy Odom and Rev. Jeff Foster officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens.

The family will visit with friends on Tuesday from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

The Maury County native was the son of the late Mick E. Hines and Dorothy Cook Hines. He was a member of the Sandy Hook United Methodist Church. Murray was an avid cattleman. He developed a love for farming while working on his uncle Howard Cook's farm as a child in Hickman County and later raised Hereford, Charolais, Santa Gertrudis and Angus cattle, tobacco, corn and hay on his own farm. He was a member of the Maury County Cattleman's Association and of the Charolais and Angus Cattle Associations.

Murray met Dallas Olean Joiner in 1950 and after a 9 month courtship, were married on February 13, 1951 and remained married for 57 years. Murray became the father of 5 children, 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Murray began his work career at the Hamilton Drug Store while still in high school. After graduating from Hay Long High School in 1948, he began working for the Wool Mill. In 1949 at the age of 19, Murray began work at the Victor Furnace Plant in Mt. Pleasant. In 1957, he transferred to the Organic Plant as a B-operator and then worked his way up. He became foreman over theT1 and Intermediate Units and later became straight Day Foreman over all units. He eventually became Safety Director over the entire plant and retired from that position in 1990. Victor changed ownership several times becoming Stauffer Organic, Cheeseborough/Ponds, Unilever, ICI and Zeneca during his almost 42 year career with the company.

Murray enjoyed working with cattle on his farm, watching sporting events and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors in addition to his wife include his children: Janice Glenn Robinson of Mt. Pleasant, Dr. Murray Lorraine Hines II of Chula, GA, and Susan Derek Burns of Chattanooga; one sister: Elizabeth Ann Murrell of Hendersonville; grandchildren: Keith Robinson of Austin, TX, Sharon Robinson of Lewisburg, Jason Robinson of Mt. Pleasant and Sherrie Hines of Athens, GA; great-grandchildren: Jessica Robinson of Mt. Pleasant and SheaLyn Burgett of Leiwsburg.

Pallbearers will be Walter Marlin, Bob Bohrman, Leon Corbin, Jeremy Corbin, Wallace Chapman, Henry Chapman, Jimmy McClain, William R. Dinwiddie and Wayne Sanders. Honorary pallbearers will be Andrew Massey, Daryl Massey, Jimmy Hines, Willard Murphy, Michael Davis, Norman Wayne Davis, Charles Bassham, Neal England, Billy Hollis, Mack Scott, Scott Renfro, Steve Renfro and Bill Sexton.

A special thanks is given to the physicians and nursing staff at the Columbia Oncology Center, Dr. Dake, Dr. Marshall, Dr. Vinson and Caris Hospice.
