Merle D. Logan

Mr. Merle D. Logan, 78, died Sunday, April 25, 2004 at his residence on Jefferson Drive in Columbia. He was greatly admired by family and friends and will be deeply missed.

A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Logan?s life will be conducted Saturday, May 1, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Reverend James Hughes, Jr. officiating. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 12:00 noon until service time at the funeral home.

A native of Des Moines, Iowa, he was the son of the late Joe P. and Leah Carr Logan. After graduating from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines in 1943, he served for 3 ½ years in the U.S. Navy as a tugboat electrician stationed in San Francisco Bay. After the war, he returned home to Iowa and in 1950, graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. in Engineering. He began his career with Douglas Aircraft in southern California where he met and married the former Betty L. Friedt of Wadsworth, Ohio in 1951. Soon after their marriage, the couple relocated to Wadsworth where he worked for Babcock and Wilcox Company in nearby Barberton. He was later employed by the E.I. Dupont Company in Chattanooga, Columbia, and Old Hickory, TN, Philadelphia, PA, and Buffalo, NY. He retired as a licensed professional Senior Engineer in 1985 after 32 years of service with Dupont. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the First United Methodist Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Thomas D. Karen Logan of Concord, NC, Robert M. Joan Logan of Nesconset, NY, James E. Laura Logan of Carrollton, TX, and Anne E. Logan Timm of Knoxville, TN; two brothers, Robert H. Marge Logan of Monticello, MN and Verne A. Marge Logan of Silver Springs, NY; nine grandchildren, Andrew, Ashley, Jennifer, Joe, Tim, and Kimberly Logan, Laura , Christopher, and Daniel Potts.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Highland Rim, 2014 Elmer Pogue Drive, Columbia, Tennessee 38401 or the First United Methodist Church Steinway Fund, 222 W. Seventh Street, Columbia, Tennessee 38401.
