Melvin Leon Thomas

Melvin Leon Thomas, age 80, passed away on Tuesday April 23, 2013 in his home in Ethridge, surrounded by family.

Melvin was born May 24, 1932 to the late Leslie and Gertrude Thomas in Tupelo, Mississippi. Melvin was retired from Union Carbide. He was a trained crane operator. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, during the Korean War and remained in service until his retirement. Melvin was a member of the American Legion.

Services for Melvin will be held Friday April 26, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia. Tony Ayers will be officiating. Burial will follow at Arlington Cemetery. The local American Legion Post 19 Herbert Griffin will present honors. The family will visit with friends Thursday April 25th from 4-8 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Home in Columbia.

Pallbearers for Melvin will be: Brett Miller, David Fly, Keith Cates, Paul Young, and Tim Van Abel. Honorary pallbearers for Melvin are Bobby Hardison, Archie Dunnivant and James Fly.

Melvin is survived by his wife, Aiko “Sasaki” Thomas; One granddaughter: Carol (Tim) Van Abel of Lawrenceburg; Two great grandsons: Caleb Van Abel and Brett Miller; One great granddaughter: Katelyn Van Abel; One sister: Carolyn Fly; One brother: Raye Thomas. He was preceded in death by his daughter Janice Beard.
