Melvenia Allen, age 88, of the Mt. Joy Community, passed away peacefully at her residence on Thursday, September 8, 2016. She was born December 8, 1927, in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee to Algie Dyer and Berta Mae Gilmore.
Melvenia’s memory will be cherished by all who knew her. She was truly a beautiful person inside and out. “Granny” lived to share her life with family, and they will always remember the scriptures beside her chair as well as food on the table. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was always helping and serving others in her community which led her to work at Williams Funeral Home and Polk Memorial Gardens.
Melvenia is survived by her daughters, Patricia (Morris) Woods of South Jordan, Utah; Tena (Billy) Wood of Mt. Pleasant; and Alesia Morrow of Columbia; grandchildren, Donna (Mark) Heninger, Kenny (Kristin) Woods, Chris Woods, Kim (Larry) Fee, Mike (Sandi) Wood, and Justin Morrow; twelve great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, A.D. (Birdie) Gilmore of Griffin, Georgia, and Betty Jean Crane of Crawfordville, Georgia; and several loving nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Mark Henson and Chester Allen; siblings, Mary Lorene Kelley, Mattie Lou Scott, and Harold Dean Gilmore.
The family will gather with friends on Saturday, September 10, 2016, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, September 11, 2016, at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia at 10:00 a.m. with Bishop Robin Spencer officiating. Burial will follow at Polk Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Billy Wood, Donna Heninger, Mike Wood, Evan Wood, Larry Fee, Justin Morrow, and Ricky Gilmore. Honorary Pallbearers will be Morris Woods, Mark Heninger, Kenny Woods, Chris Woods, John Simmons, M.D., Alan Blevins, and George Roger Gilliam.
The family would like to thank the staff of the First Floor of Maury Regional Medical Center, Life Care Center of Columbia, and Caris for the compassionate care given to Melvenia.
