Master Sgt. Retired Alvin C. Atwell

Master Sgt.retired Alvin C. Atwell, age 95, a resident of Culleoka, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Maury Regional Medical Center.

Born February 18, 1916 in Jersey, Arkansas, he was the son of the late William and Callie Anders Atwell. Mr. Atwell was the husband of the late Ophelia Elizabeth Atwell. He was a career Army veteran who retired as a Master Sergeant E8. He was the recipient of three Bronze Stars, and a Silver Star. Mr. Atwell's daughter says that her dad was the toughest, yet the most gentle person and was so loved by the men who served with him. He served our country during World War II with General Patton and in Korea. Mr. Atwell was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Atwell is survived by one daughter and one son: Betty Gilbert of Chicago, IL and Greg Atwell of Columbia; grandchildren: Justin Max Gilbert of Playa Del Rey, California, Ary Samuel Gilbert of Chicago, IL, Gerri Elizabeth Matt Milkovie of Oxford, MI, Brett Gregory Atwell of Columbia, TN, Kristin Yearly of Ohio, Jason Atwell, and Patrick Atwell of Berkley, MI and Becky Snapp; great grandchildren: Wyatt Matthew Milkovie of Michigan and Emily Grace Atwell of Columbia, Gabrielle, Austin and Tyler Yearly, Rachel Stephens and Jason and Kevin Snapp; two great-great grandchildren; two sisters: Evelyn "Snooks" Perdle and Carrie Vaughn of Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry Joe Atwell and Terry William Atwell; four brothers; James, Ernest, Clifton and Charlie Atwell, and one sister Emily Atwell.

Celebration of Life services for Mr. Atwell will be conducted Thursday, April 7, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at First Assembly of God with Rev. Charles E. Blythe officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the United States Army.

The family will visit with friends on Thursday from 5:00- 6:00 p.m. at the church.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Rick Watters, grandchildren and Auburn Heights American Legion.
