Mary Ellen Staggs

Mary Ellen Chapman Staggs, age 82, a resident of Webster St. in Columbia, passed away on Monday, June 15, at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville.

Funeral services for Ms. Staggs will be conducted Friday at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Rev. Jim Wright and Rev. J.O. Martin officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will visit with friends Wednesday and Thursday from 3:00 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Born on June 30, 1926 in Maury County, she was the daughter of the late John Chapman and Bessie Renfro Chapman Brown. She was first married to the late A.J. Skipper, who was killed during WW II and later to the late William Owen Staggs. Mary Ellen first worked at Storktown which later became Weather Tamer. She retired from Bel Air Nursing Home where she worked in housekeeping and in the kitchen and later did private housekeeping. She was of the Baptist faith. Mary Ellen's favorite pastimes were being at home, working in her yard, spending time with her children and grandchildren and going to yard sales.

Survivors include her children: William Ray Dorothy Staggs of Hampshire, Billy Wayne Staggs of Mt. Pleasant, Jimmy Udel Staggs and David Ray Shelia Staggs, both of Columbia; grandchildren: Jimmy Roe Staggs of Columbia, Jason Staggs of Columbia, Chris Roland of Columbia, Brad Jennifer Pugh of Hohenwald, Tracy Staggs of Columbia, Rebecca Jeff Owens of Pulaski, Dawn Lindsey of Hampshire and a special grandchild: Timmy Heather Beard of WI; great-grandchildren: Jordan Michael Staggs of Culleoka, Ashley Hammox of Columbia, Dylan Pugh of Hampshire, C.J. Lindsey of Hampshire, Paxton Lindsey of Hampshire, Autumn Owens of Pulaski, LeighAnn Owens of Pulaski, and Jasmine Pugh of Hohenwald; one great-great-grandchild: Azieanna Brown of Columbia; one niece: Tina Brown Bennett and three nephews: Clarence Lewis, Dewayne Foster and Tim Goar. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Little Dennie and Minnie Goar and four brothers: Russ Chapman, Leon Red Bird Chapman, Alton Jim Chapman and Willie Brown Jr.

Pallbearers will be Brad Pugh, Dylan Pugh, Jimmy "Roe" Staggs, Jason Staggs, Clarence Lewis, Tim Goar and Jerry Wayne Hammox. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Faith Community Church, New Life Baptist Church and the staff of Vanderbilt Neurology Dept. ICU.
