Mary Elizabeth was born in Mt. Pleasant, Tn. on November 12, 1929.
She was the only daughter of 6 children born to Willard and Agnes King. Mary Elizabeth graduated from Haylong High School in 1948. At 17 years old, she left the small town behind and headed for Nashville to enroll in nursing school at Nashville General Hospital. She graduated in 1951 as a Registered Nurse, and joined the United States Air Force as a first Lieutenant. At her first duty station in Tampa, Florida, she met and married her husband Lt. Daniel J. Toner. She was very active in the Air Force community, beauty pageants, parades and social events all while working as a Registered Nurse and raising 4 children.
Mary, Dan and their children lived in various duty stations in the U.S., but she always made a comfortable home anywhere they were stationed. She loved to entertain friends and family and enjoyed reading, discussing politics, antique collecting and was an accomplished stained glass artist. She retired from nursing in 1990, after working in various healthcare settings including the emergency room of her old alma mater, Nashville General.
Mrs. Toner is survived by three daughters: Catherine Toner-Logue husband, Dr. Brian Logue, Dr. Danielle Toner husband, Ted Tuleck, and Mary L. "Mitzi" Toner all of Bloomington, IN; one son: Joseph D. Toner wife, Bree; grandchildren: Caitlin Logue, Hayden Heisser, Scarlet and Declan Toner; brothers: Billy Wayne King wife, Carol, Gary Joe King wife, Sherry; several nieces, nephews living in the Maury County area. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years Lt. Col. Daniel J. TonerRetired; brothers: Robert Earl King, Warren D. King, and Willard W. King, Jr.
Mary Elizabeth passed away on March 24, 2012, in Tamarac, FL, after becoming ill while visiting with her son's family.
Visitation will be at 3:00-4:30 pm Monday, April 2, 2012 at the Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. Graveside ceremonies will be conducted 5:00 pm Monday at Arlington Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant, TN with Rev. Bob Adair officiating.
