Martha Jean Mccain

Martha Jean Chappell McCain, age 83 of Mt. Pleasant, passed away at Life Care Center of Hickman County on Wednesday, April 10, 2013.

A native of Mt. Pleasant, Martha was born on July 25, 1929, to the late Richard Odie Chappell and Mary Elsie Whitwell Chappell and grew up in the Mt. Joy community. She was a 1946 graduate of Hay Long High School. In her younger years, she worked as a school teacher at Ettaton School and later became the owner of Mt. Joy Grocery Store. She also worked as a sales associate at Peebles department store. Ms. McCain was a member of Mt. Joy Cumberland Presbyterian church. Everyone always knew Martha as such a wonderful person who was so good and kind to everyone. She was an excellent seamstress and even made clothes for her family. She was very special to all those who knew and loved her.

Funeral services for Ms. McCain will be Sunday, April 14, at 2:00 PM at Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Dwight Liles officiating. Burial will follow the service in Arlington Cemetery. Family will receive friends for visitation Saturday, April 13, from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Ms. Martha McCain is survived by: one daughter, Teresa (Kenny) Benderman; one son, Steve McCain; her grandchildren: Amy (Davis) Harris, Brent McCain, Brad McCain, Dana (Clay) Staggs, and Julie Benderman; her great-grandchildren: Abbey Harris, Allison Harris, Savannah McCain, Courtney McCain, Seth McCain, Madison Staggs, Cole Staggs, and Ryan Benderman; her step-great-grandchildren: Cale Staggs, Cayden Staggs, and Tanna Petrose; very special cousins: Wilma Odom, Diane Robertson, and Linda Beard also survive her. Martha was preceded in death by: one daughter, Robin McCain; brother & sister-in-law, Walton & Bobbye Chappell; one brother, Buddy Chappell; and her children’s father, Robert Ottis McCain.

Pallbearers for the service will be: Randall Odom, Gerald Odom, Ricky Chappell, Tony Chappell, Jimmy Hines, Mike Whitwell, Terry Whitwell, and Gary Hunt.

Honorary pallbearers to serve will be: Mike Chappell, Earl Hayes, Steven Wright, Donnie Joe Williams, Willard Grimes, Odell Haywood, Ray McCain, Mark McCain, David Greenfield, Ricky Massey, Jeff Beard, and David Hinson.

A very special thank you goes to Life Care of Centerville staff who took excellent care of Ms. Martha as well as her family. They were always so kind and thoughtful.
