Mark Anthony Hayes

November 13, 1955 — March 15, 2019

Mark Anthony “Poppy” “Too-Tall” Hayes left this world to join his creator Friday morning, March 15, 2019, surrounded by his family on his beloved “Hayes Hollow Farm” in the West Fork Community.

Mark was born in Columbia on November 13, 1955, to the late Paul Stephen Hayes and his mother who survives him, Martha Faye Milan. Mark married Melissa Carol Woods on July 16, 1983, and they just celebrated their 35th year of marriage. Mark was a strong and faithful Christian. He was a faithful worker at Solvay for 43 years. Mark was a Volunteer Firefighter in Mt. Pleasant. He coached and assisted many sports including softball, baseball, football and basketball touching the lives of hundreds of Maury County’s youth. He participated every chance he could in food giveaways. He enjoyed riding his ranger on his farm that he worked hard all his life for. He loved feeding his deer and turkeys. He spent time fishing on the river and at Second Creek. Nothing compared to the love he had for his family and church.

Mark was also nicknamed “Bobby Hayes” in a childhood memoir entitled “The Backwards Z” written by his childhood friend Marshall McGaw where he told stories of their adventures and troublemaking in Mt. Pleasant.

The family will honor Mark’s life in service on Monday, March 18, 2019, at The Main Street Church of Christ in Mt. Pleasant beginning at 4:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until time of the service. Brother Randy Kersey and Hal Brown will be officiating. A private burial will be scheduled at a separate time. The family requests that flowers not be sent, but rather donate in Mark’s honor to the Backpack for Kids program in Mt. Pleasant or the Food Pantry. Donations may be brought to the service.

Pallbearers to serve for Mark will be Anthony “Big A” Davis, Terry Brewer, Jon Mullins, Patrick Alexander, Brent Hayes, Wendell “Bubba” Spears, Waylon “Huck” Hayes, Trevor Brewer, Tyler Brewer, Scotty Nance, Jay Green, Ricky Frazier, Jimmy Mullins, Devan Nance, and Members of the Mt. Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department.
