Marilyn Dell McGuffey Combs passed from this life on July 1, 2016. Born April 9, 1937 in Highland, KY, to Hubert McGuffey and Hetty Rose Smith McGuffey, she is survived by her husband of 59 years, William Edward Combs, Mt. Pleasant; a son, William Gregory (Marilyn M.) Combs, step-grandson Billy Carrigan, Mt. Pleasant; a brother Ranny (Evonna) McGuffey, Highland, KY; niece Tanya Jean Owens, Louisville, KY; a nephew, Kevin (Rachel) McGuffey; great-nephew Ryan McGuffey, great-niece Mary Elizabeth McGuffey, Lexington, KY.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Jean McGuffey Owens.
She was a member of Mt. Joy Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where she served as secretary/treasurer of the Women’s Organization for two years. Marilyn graduated Memorial High School in Waynesburg, KY with the Citizenship Medal and continued on to Campbellsville University, Campbellsville, KY, where she left with a fourth-ranking student honor in Business and English.
During her lifetime Mrs. Combs worked with the Boy Scouts as a counselor and business manager, as well as serving as an officer in various other organizations. She earned a certificate in poetry and recently penned a fictional novel. For two years, Marilyn wrote “Combing the Countryside” column, published monthly in the Columbia Daily Herald. Painting with oils, acrylics and watercolor were her extra-curricular activities.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 6, at 3:00 P.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home with Mark King officiating and Russ Adcox sharing a special reading. The family will visit with friends on Wednesday from 1:00 P.M. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Ranny McGuffey, Jimmy McClain, Mickey Allen, Mike Waugh, Billy Carrigan, Julian Moore and John Owen Keeton. Honorary pallbearers will be Kevin McGuffey, Ryan McGuffey, Mary Elizabeth McGuffey, Rev. Larry Smith, Gerry Smith, Dalton Smith, Sandra Smith, Sharon Smith-Purchase, Fay Smith Edwards, Tanya Jean Owens, Charles Duncan, M.K. Parham, Elmer Jenkins, Grady Hayes, Tommy Stanfield, Joe Crews, Ray Kennedy, Jesse Quirk, George Roger Gilliam and Dr. Doug Kennedy.
