M.H. “Cotton” Massey, age 81, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at his residence.
Cotton was born August 13, 1935 in Maury County, the son of the late Marshall H. Massey, Sr., and Lillie Mae Holt Massey. On May 3, 1953, he married Mary Evelyn Staggs Massey, who preceded him in death on March 24, 2011.
He loved the outdoors, fishing and camping. Two of his favorite past times were riding the pontoon with his family and sitting on the patio watching the hummingbirds. Cotton’s family was his life. He was a member of the Cross Bridges Baptist Church. As a young man, Cotton worked for Sisco Trucking before joining the Mt. Pleasant Police Department. He worked for several years with Mobil Chemical in Mt. Pleasant. Cotton retired from the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department as Fire Chief.
Survivors include his sons, Rickey (Terry) Massey of Mt. Pleasant and Rodney Massey of Mt. Pleasant, grandchildren, Drew Massey and Adam (Jennifer) Massey, both of Columbia; great-grandchildren, Addison Grace Massey, Emerson Claire Massey and Hope Elizabeth Massey along with special friends, Brandy Crowell, Phoebe Turner and Tim Brashears. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Harry (Martha) Massey and Raymond (Alma) Massey.
Funeral services for Cotton will be conducted Sunday at 3:00 P.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rev. Jimmy Peyton and Rev. Bob Mullenix officiating. Entombment will follow in the Polk Memorial Mausoleum.
The family will visit with friends on Saturday from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Drew Massey, Adam Massey, Ronnie Staggs, Wayne Dugger, Steve Newell, Michael Massey, Ray McCain and Vernon White.
Honorary pallbearers will be past and present members of the Mt. Pleasant Police and Fire Departments, Dr. Dana Chandler, Dr. C.H. Jameson, Dr. Mike Sattasiri, the staff of the Maury Regional Oncology Center, Avalon Hospice, Sherman Massey, Sherryl Hickman, Billy Ray Campbell, Lewis Wayne (Janice) Holt, C. D. (Faye) Sizemore, Cathy Newell, Bob (Donetta) Murray and Elizabeth Dawson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.
