Leith Tjernberg Honning, age 89, a thirty-five year resident of Columbia, died Thursday, January 16 at Maury Regional Hospital. She was a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Leith was born in 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. She raised her family with her husband, Eugene Honning in McHenry, Illinois. She later retired and moved to Columbia, Tennessee in 1984. She graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1947. She worked as a deli counter server for Jewel grocery stores in Illinois and later as a bank teller for First Farmers and Merchants National Bank in Tennessee upon her retirement. She loved to be with her family, volunteered at Maury Regional hospital, and enjoyed knitting: afghans, slippers and hats for those she loved. Leith was known for wearing red lipstick, baking on Saturdays with her grandchildren, and smelling like Chanel #5.
Leith is preceded in death by her husband Eugene A. Honning (44 years), upon his death in 1997. She is survived by her five children: Susan Ferguson (Mark) of Polk City, Iowa, Ted Honning of Columbia, Tennessee, John Honning of Austin Texas, Judy Sherman(Cary) of Crystal Lake, Illinois, and Amy Reece (David) of Columbia, Tennessee. Her beloved grandchildren include: Krista McCleish(Nick), Valerie Willcox (Alex), Brian Ferguson (Samantha), Amanda Miklos (Dave), Kyle Sherman, JT Honning (Christina), Zachary Sherman, Katie Reece, Ryan Reece, and Lana Honning. Her great grandchildren legacy include: Miles McCleish, Mason McCleish, Micah McCleish, Sadie Miklos, Sidney Miklos, Eleanore Willcox,
Jamison Willcox, and Connell Ferguson.
Visitation with the family will be on Thursday, January 23, from 4-6:00 PM. Funeral services for Leith Honning will be conducted Friday, January 24 at 10 a.m. at Williams Funeral Home with Father Thomas Wilson officiating.
