Julia Willine Cooper Smith

June 7, 1921 — July 14, 2016

Julia Willine Cooper Smith, age 95, passed away on July 14, 2016 at Maury Regional Medical Center. She was a resident of Columbia, Tennessee. She chose to be cremated. Williams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements and there will be no services. Inurnment will be at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens in St. Louis, Missouri.

She was born in Melbourne, Arkansas on June 7, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Sherman Herbert Cooper and Lillie Montgomery Cooper. On July 14, 1945 she married Harry Derrell Smith, Sr.. He preceded her in death on July 29, 1985 in St. Louis, Missouri.

She retired from Famous-Barr Company (Macy’s) in St. Louis in 1994, where she had worked for 39 years. She was a long time member of the Hazelwood church of Christ. She moved to Columbia in February, 2010 to be close to her son, Michael, and his family.

She loved God and Jesus, her family, her church family of the Jackson Heights Church of Christ, classic country music, to visit the Smokey Mountains and Gardens.

The family wants to say “Thank You” to Dr. Dana Chandler, nurses Cindy and Melody of family Health Group in Mt. Pleasant, Dr. Hany Rezk, the staff of Maury Regional Medical Center and Compassus Hospice for their love and compassion for Julia.

She is survived by two sons, Harry Derrell (Gail) Smith, Jr. of East Longmeadow, Massachusetts and Michael Glenn (Linda) Smith of Columbia, Tennessee. Grandchildren, Scott M. (Sandy) Smith of Lyons, Oregon, Lori B. Smith of Holyoke, Massachusetts, Craig S. Smith of Springfield, Massachusetts and Troy M. Smith of Summertown, Tennessee. Great Grandchildren, Michael J. Smith and Kaitlyn M. Smith of Lyons, Oregon.

Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her five brothers and two sisters, Reginald Cooper, Revel Cooper, Remel Cooper, Roby Cooper, Billy Joe Cooper, Bethel Cooper Bowen, and Doskie Cooper Ford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jackson Heights Church of Christ, 1200 Nashville Hwy, Columbia, TN 38401.
