John D. Gibson, Jr.

September 24, 1914 — March 30, 2009

Mr. John D. "Papa John" Gibson, Jr., age 94, a former resident of Adams Avenue in Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Monday, March 30 at NHC/Hillview.

Graveside services for Mr. Gibson will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. in the Arlington Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant with Bro. Jim Walsh, Bro. Tommy Hagewood and Bro. Randy Sprouse officiating.

The family will visit with friends from 11:00 A.M. – 1:30 P.M. on Wednesday at Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant.

Mr. Gibson was born in Maury County on September 24, 1919, the son of the late John D. and Margaret Van Hooser Gibson and was married to the late Dorothy Wells Gibson. A graduate of Haylong High School, he loved to fish and hunt. John worked as an agent for American General Insurance and loved working with and refinishing antiques. On May 3, 1931, Mr. Gibson received recognition from the Boy Scouts of America the National Court of Honor for saving the life of Park Owen, Jr. from drowning. He was a member and longtime elder of the Locust Street Church of Christ.

Survivors include his son: Johnny Mary Gibson of Mt. Pleasant; his grandchildren: Bryan Gibson, Maria Stefon, Tayna Timothy Vandygriff, all of Mt. Pleasant; great grandchildren: Johnathan Runions, Coty Runions, Kaleb Vandygriff, Kennan Vandygriff and Dalton Stefon, all of Mt. Pleasant; sister-in-law: Mrs. Sam "Okie" Gibson. He was preceded in death by a brother: Sam Gibson.

Pallbearers will be Bryan Gibson, Johnathan Runions, Coty Runions, Dalton Stefon, Kaleb Vandygriff, Keenan Vandygriff, Timothy Vandygriff, Joey Gibson, Harold Hinson and Joe Frank Kerr. Honorary pallbearers will be Claude Brawner, Charles Crotzer, Ernest Snell, Carson Russell, Jack Van Hooser, Charles Van Hooser, Dr. Cummins Couch & staff, staff of NHC/Hillview, staff of NHC Home Health and the members of the Locust Street Church of Christ.

The family would like to give special thanks to their family members for all the love and care given to Papa John, especially to Maria and Johnathan.
