John David Slaughter departed this life to be with his Lord on July 31, 2014 at Signature Health Care.
He was born on March 31, 1943 to the late Samuel Arthur Slaughter and Minnie Brooks Slaughter.
He was an active member of Walker Memorial Baptist Church in Franklin and later of the First United Pentecostal Church of Columbia. He loved working in the church, especially driving the church bus for the children’s ministry. He worked as a police officer for the Franklin Police Department and the Brentwood Police Department. After leaving the police department, he was a contract mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. After retiring, he worked part time at Wal-Mart in the paint department. He loved his family, people, hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He never met a stranger and will be remembered for his infectious smile.
The family will visit with friends on Saturday, August 2, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, Tennessee. The funeral service will be on Sunday, August 3, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at in the Chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, Tennessee. Burial will follow at Santa Fe Cemetery.
Left to cherish his memory are two sons: Roy (Bridgett) Slaughter of Manchester and David (Joyce) Slaughter of Spring Hill; four grandchildren: Emilee, Ashlee, Brandon, and Sarah; step-grandson Donald Gandy; brother Arthur Slaughter; the mother of his children Mattie King; four step-children: Marsha (Tommy) Kinzer, Donna (Gary) Witherow, and Jacky and Jeff Rowland; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister Lila Cook, half-brother Tomas Adkisson, and nephew Randell Adkisson.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Avalon Hospice Association.
