John Douglas Clay

April 23, 1969 — May 25, 2024

Columbia

John Douglas Clay, 55, of Columbia, Tennessee, left this world unexpectedly on Saturday, May 25, 2024. His passing has cast a shadow over all who had the privilege of knowing him. John was born on April 23, 1969, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Doug and Nell Clay. His journey through life was marked by determination and a boundless capacity for love and kindness. A graduate of Franklin Road Academy in 1988, John's athletic prowess earned him a full basketball scholarship to Samford University, John completed his bachelor's degree at Belmont University.

After completing his undergrad, John found a calling in contracting. A master craftsman and skilled sub-contractor, John's reputation for excellence and unwavering work ethic preceded him. He was particularly skilled in framing. When John wasn’t working he enjoyed playing basketball with friends or could be found at his farm spending time with his family tending to his animals and property. John unfortunately suffered an injury to his knees and was unable to play basketball any longer. However, this brought another path and new joy to his life. He taught himself to play the guitar and found success touring with his band, even sharing the stage, opening for the legends Lynyrd Skynyrd.

On August 19, 2016, John married Terri, the love of his life, and embraced his role as a devoted husband and loving stepfather to her children, Peyton and Caleb Cook. Their life together on the farm brought him immeasurable joy, especially his bond with his beloved Sunny, epitomizing his real-life Dr. Doolittle persona. He had a true heart for others, one full of compassion. His family was everything and he was always open to welcoming another animal or lending a helping hand to those in need. It’s just who he was.

John leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will endure through the memories of those he touched. Alongside his wife, Terri, and his parents, Doug and Nell, he is survived by his stepdaughter, Peyton Cook, stepson, Caleb Cook, sisters Jerri Lynn (John) Charron and Lucy Clay, step-grandson Hutson Cordle, and nieces Addie and Mary Beth.

As we bid farewell to John, let us take comfort in knowing that his spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him. May his memory be a beacon of light guiding us through the darkness of grief, reminding us to love freely and live fully, just as he did.
