Mr. Joe Sherrod Jones, age 84, of Leoma, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, December 06, 2014 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Joe was born on July 15, 1930 to A. D. Jones and Agnes Stover Jones in Dallas, Texas. He served honorably in the United States Navy and this began a varied and storied life filled with adventure: serving his country, serving his Lord, serving his family, and serving his fellow man.
On September 7, 1965 Joe married Wanda Stutts and they began their family together. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. His family says that he was an avid traveler, enjoyed life, was a true “man’s man” and shared all these things with the family he loved so much.
Mr. Jones earned a Ph.D from 2 different universities: the University of Southern Florida and the University of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He went on to serve as a missionary in Louisiana. He also worked as a commercial diver in New Orleans and was noted for having the first total saturation commercial diving job there. Additionally, he was by trade an archeologist and was the President of the International Anthropological Institute.
Joe is survived by his devoted wife: Wanda Jones of Leoma; daughters: Samantha (Doug) Kavanaugh of Maine, Tenny (Jesse) Jones of Washington, and Cindy (Sean) Fitzgerald of Texas; grandchildren: Randi (Eric) Quire, Jessica (Tyson) Sheddy, Kerry Hackemack, Samantha Jones, Christine Jones and Amy Nelson; great-grandchildren: Austin Quire, Sienna Quire, Jack Sheddy, and Khira Jones. He is preceded in death by his parents: A. D. Jones, Sr. and Agnes Stover Jones; siblings: A. D. Jones, Jr., Margaret Kemt, Linda Sue Ross and Ed Jones; son: Joe Sherrod Jones and grandson: David Jones.
The family will celebrate Mr. Jones’ life with a private memorial service at a later date.
