Joe was born on March 14, 1935, in the serene town of Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee, in the small community of Mt. Joy, and from a young age, he possessed an innate curiosity and passion for technology. He channeled these interests into a remarkable career at AT&T, where he worked as a technology technician for over 45 years. Joe's commitment and expertise earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and made him a valued asset to the company.

Throughout his life, Joe embarked on numerous journeys across the United States to fulfill his professional obligations. Despite the demands of his work, he never wavered in his dedication to his family. Joe's beloved wife, Eva Rigsby Johnston, stood by his side for 62 incredible years, providing unwavering support and strength. Together, they created a nurturing and loving home for their children, Terry Johnston and Carissa (Steve) Scales.

Joe's children were a constant source of pride and joy. He embraced his role as a father with boundless love, offering guidance, support, and encouragement. His devotion to his family was evident in every aspect of his life, as he made countless sacrifices to ensure their well-being and happiness. Joe's impact extended beyond his immediate family, as he touched the lives of his grandchildren, Matthew and Heather Scales, with his wisdom, kindness, and unconditional love.

The family will receive friends and visitors at Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant on Saturday, May 27, 2023, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, with a funeral service commencing at 2:00 PM. To follow, Mr. Johnston will be laid to rest at Arlington Cemetery.
