Geraldine (Jerrie, J.J.) Brooks Jackson-Hiner devoted Mother passed away on April 8th at her home in Columbia, TN at the age of 85. She was surrounded in love by her son & daughter-in-law, Waverly & Stephanie Jackson.
Born in Pisgah Ridge in Hampshire,TN to Joe D. Brooks & Katherine Crowder Brooks she helped work the family farm with her siblings Bill, Vernon, JD & her twin brother Pete along with her sister Ellen where they all learned the value of character & hard work.
She was a member of the graduating class of 1958 at Hampshire Highschool.
Jerrie grew up in the Presbyterian faith and attended First Presbyterian Church in Columbia for many years.
Jerrie’s work career included Production Credit (Payroll), Smelter Service (HR Secretary) & Tennessee Farm Bureau (Secretary).
But Jerrie is most known for being the original Owner/Operator of JJ’s BBQ named after her initials “Jerrie Jackson” where she was the original creator of the giant baked potato that we all love to this day.
Jerrie & her husband, Don Hiner purchased & restored a 1915 Model T & a 1974 Flamingo Pink VW Beetle. They enjoyed entering many car shows across the U.S. & they won many trophies & awards. Jerrie also enjoyed decorating her beautiful homes & planting beautiful vegetable & flower gardens so she could end her days watching gorgeous butterflies & hummingbirds in her backyard while watching the sun set. Jerrie especially loved Pink Flamingos & not only decorated with them but visited many locations to see them up close.
Early on she & Don honeymooned in Puna Canta, Dominican Republic, then traveled together to 22 states in their beautiful RV. They summered in Melbourne, FL & lastly in Sebring, FL until her husband’s passing when she moved back home to Columbia.
Jerrie is survived by her son, John Waverly (Stephanie) Jackson, Jr. of Columbia, her grandchildren Ashley (Michael) McClure of Chapel Hill, Paige (Jacob) Patterson of Summertown & Tyler Powell of Culleoka, her great grandchildren Finley Green & Rush Patterson of Summertown, Hayden McClure of Chapel Hill and Laila Powell of Summertown. Her sister-in- law Joan Brooks (wife of brother Vernon Brooks) of Mt. Pleasant & Lucy Brooks (wife of twin brother Pete Brooks) of Hohenwald & several nieces and nephews.
Jerrie was preceded in death by her husband, Don Hiner, her parents, Joe D & Katherine Crowder Brooks of Hampshire. Siblings Bill Brooks of Mt Pleasant, Vernon Brooks of Mt. Pleasant, Gerald (Pete) Brooks of Hampshire, J.D (April) Brooks of Hampshire, and Ellen Brooks (Charlie) Anderson of Mt. Pleasant, her 8 month old son, Bobby Hand of Hampshire along with nephews Troyce Anderson & Joe D. Brooks, Jr.
Jerrie’s funeral arrangements will be Saturday, April 26th. Visitation will be at 11:00 a.m at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, Tennessee. A Memorial Service will begin at 12:00 at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia, Tennessee. Fellowship with family & friends will be immediately after the service in the Blevins Hall Reception Center of Williams Funeral home.
A private family burial will be held at the family cemetery where Jerrie will be laid to rest with her twin brother Pete Brooks.
Honorary pallbearers will be Tyler Powell, Michael McClure, Jacob Patterson, Chrispher Brooks, Stephen Brooks, Barry Brooks, Jeff Brooks, Edward Foster & David Lovell & her compassionate Hospice Team.
To honor Jerrie, the family asks those attending the service to dress in Flamingo pink or Flamingo Jewelry or accessories. She would be tickled pink to see everyone she loves dressed up for her.
