Jeanette Gay Cowels age 85 of Spring Hill, TN, formerly of Saranac, passed away March 8, 2016. She was born September 17, 1930 in Grand Rapids the daughter of Clyde “Gene” and Gladys (Dodds) Cahoon.
Gay graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in Journalism. She was employed for 23 years as a Public Info Writer for the State of Michigan DNR. She loved nature and Michigan and was a member of the Michigan Outdoor Writers Association. Gay was also an active member of Lansing Plymouth Congregational Church and sang in the church choir. She loved to sing and was a member of the Lansing Matinée Musicale singers and High Hopes singing group.
Gay is survived by her children, David (Denise) Hanna of Chicago, IL., Trudy Timber & Michael Meaton of Las Vegas, NV., Susan (Mark) La Porte of Spring Hill, TN., and Karen (Tom) Bland of Florida; grandchildren, Eliya Hanna, Adira Hanna, Noah Hanna, Mira Hanna, Kristie Timber, Josh Timber, Jeremy (Michelle) La Porte, Robert La Porte, Nicole (Jeremy) Mattson, Patrick Beal, and Robert Beal; brother, Gary (Pat) Cahoon of Grand Rapids and 7 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 19th, 12:00 P.M. at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with Chaplain Denise Hanna officiating. Interment immediately to follow at Saranac Cemetery. Visitation will be just prior to the funeral from 10am to noon at the funeral home. Those wishing to do so may make a memorial contribution, in lieu of flowers online, at
