Jean Clayton Workman

Mrs. Jean Clayton Workman, age 77, a resident of North Main Street in Mt. Pleasant, passed away on Sunday, December 6, at NHC Hillview.

Funeral services for Jean will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with Rick Points and David Carroll and Rev. Phillip Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens.

The family will visit with friends on Tuesday from 3:00 – 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home.

Born on February 16, 1932 in Lewis County, Jean was the daughter of the late James Edward Clayton and Donna Bennett Clayton. She was married to the late Richard C. Workman who passed away on November 1, 1989. In the 1950s Jean worked for the Rob Roy Shirt Factory in Mt. Pleasant; she also worked for several years for the Drive-In Custard Stand in Mt. Pleasant and owned and operated Jean's Variety Store in Mt. Pleasant before retiring. Her pastimes included sewing and crocheting. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant.

Survivors include her children: Raymond Nola Workman of Mt. Pleasant and Sheila George Gilliam of Mt. Pleasant; special nieces: Mary Miner Bailey of Mt. Pleasant, Christine Powers of White House, TN, and Kay May of Cottontown, TN; grandchildren: Michael Katrina Workman of Murfreesboro, Roger H. Gilliam, Todd Scarlett Gilliam and Clayton Jennifer Gilliam, all of Mt. Pleasant; step-grandchildren: Carlos Donnie Attkisson of Summertown, Regina Mike Adcock of Summertown and Donna Jeff Gray of Mt. Pleasant; 12 great-grandchildren, several step great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. Jean was preceded in death by brothers and sisters: Inez Bell, Edith Bell, Willard Clayton, Ray Clayton, Luther Clayton, Bertha McCall, Margaret Matthews, Brownie Carroll, Doris Belcher, Lillian Bell and a special nephew: Tim Keltner.

Pallbearers will be Michael Workman, Roger Gilliam, Todd Gilliam, Clay Gilliam, David Workman and Pat Keltner. Honorary pallbearers will be Sheriff Enoch George, Snowball Mayberry, Capt. Jimmy Tennyson, Eddie Campbell, Jerome Clayton, Bobby Clayton, Gary Clayton, Tim May, George Bullock, Charles Dale, Phyllis Smith, Sheila Hooper, Caris Health Care employees: Melissa Bone and Tammy Walton, Dr. J. Cummins Couch and employees of NHC Hillview, including Melissa, Tabitha, Doreen, and Faye and the employees of Williams Funeral Home.
