Mr. James Homer Spires, Jr. age 69, of Culleoka, Tennessee passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at Maury Regional Medical Center.
James was born on July 4, 1947, in Maury County, Tennessee to James Homer Spires, Sr. and Maggie Pearl Poland Spires. Ellen Hickman became his wife on December 19, 1968 and they raised their two sons together in the county he grew up in. James proudly served his country in the United States Army during Vietnam. James was a retiree of the Maury County School System, retiring after many years in the maintenance department.
Survivors include his loving wife: Ellen Spires of Culleoka; James “Littleman” (Laura) Spires and J. Christopher (Aimee) Spires; grandsons: Cody Spires, Ely Spires and Brantley Spires; great-granddaughter: Paislee Spires; sisters: Doris (Danny) Grooms and Marcy Keithley; mother-in-law: Carolyn Moore; sisters-in-law: Lisa (Murray) Ring and Linda Spires; brothers-in-law: Lynn (Libby) Hickman and Richey (Alecia) Hickman; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents: James Homer Spires, Sr. and Maggie Pearl Poland Spires; sisters: Oella Spires, Pauline Johnson, Mary Pearl Nelson, Marie Pierce and Mattie Dawson; and brothers: JP Spires and Harold Spires.
Funeral services for James will be held on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Williams Funeral Home in Columbia with Eddie Watson and Danny Glenn Grooms officiating. Burial will follow at Gibsonville Cemetery in Giles County with military honors provided by the United States Army Honor Guard. The family will visit with friends on Tuesday, January 10 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and again on Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Cody Spires, Jamie Ring, Riley Ring, Murray Ring, Larry Pierce, Greg James and Danny Grooms will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be James Dean, Clyde Harris, Ely Spires, Brantley Spires and very special family friend, Carrie White.
