Mr. James Roger ?Jim? Phelps, age 60, resident of Stonewall Road in Columbia, passed away Saturday, August 21 at his residence.
Funeral services for Mr. Phelps will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. on Tuesday, August 24 in the chapel of the Williams Funeral Home of Columbia. Interment will follow at Polk Memorial Gardens with full military honors being provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 8:00 P.M. Monday at the funeral home.
Born on February 23, 1950 in Somerset, Kentucky, he was the son of the late James and Icie Vaughn Phelps and the husband of Kaye Barnett Phelps of Columbia. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War having served 4 years, received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and two Overseas Bars. He was a truck driver for Ryder and Dillon Trucking and in his early years he was a manager of a meat packing company. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son: James Brandy Phelps of Columbia; grandchildren: Brenton James ?B.J.? Phelps and Trevor Phelps and Ava Grace Phelps, all of Columbia; sisters: Mildred Bray of Cincinnati, Joyce Boone of Florida, Donna Hodge and Janet Keith, both of Somerset, KY; three brothers: Dormis ?Lester? Phelps of Norfolk, VA, Phillip Phelps and Barry Phelps, both of Manning, SC. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Clarence Phelps and Ray Phelps and two sisters: Laurel Teater and Bonnie Cain.
Pallbearers will be the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19.
