James “Jim” Talmadge Phelps, age 78, of Columbia, Tennessee passed away on July 11, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.
Jim was born on February 15, 1940 in Lynchburg, Virginia to the late Wiley and Hilda Phelps. Jim married his beloved wife, Kathey, on September 2, 2000. Jim loved his family and life; he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was always willing to do anything that he could for anyone. He was always great about remembering everyone’s birthdays and anniversaries which always meant so much to his family and friends. Jim also loved UT football and Nascar; he was a die-hard fan of both. Jim enjoyed driving his truck; he had a CDL license even until his death. Jim lived by the motto that you should always run into fire and never away from it.
Jim is survived by his wife, Kathey Phelps, of Columbia, TN; children: Teresa (Tim) Clayton of Chattanooga, TN, Brian (Becky) Phelps, of Clarksville, TN, Honey Blair, of Shelbyville, TN, Kerry (Jeff) Triplitt, of Christiana, TN, and Roscoe (Amber) Williams, of Murfreesboro, TN; grandchildren: Leilani Clayton, Michael Clayton, Lexi Triplitt, Drake Williams and Alec Williams; great grandchildren: Isaiah Sawyer, Dylan Sawyer, Avalon Sawyer, Dominick Reed and Michael Sawyer; brothers: Kenneth (Dorothy) Phelps, of Mannings, SC and Gerald (Ardis) Phelps, of Virginia Beach, VA; brother in laws: Stoney (Dianna, daughter Darcy) Orton, of Union City, TN and Terry Orton, of Columbia, TN; many nieces and nephews; aunt: Lucille Davidson and uncles: Bobby (Betty Dale) Phelps and Joe (Pat) Moss.
The family will visit with friends on Friday, July 13, 2018 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia. A funeral service will be held on July 14, 2018 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of Williams Funeral Home with Rev. Kenneth “Billy” Phelps officiating, Roscoe Williams and Wayne Phillips are participating. Interment will follow at Polk Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be presented by American Legion Herbert Griffin Post 19.
Pallbearers are: Jerry Phelps, Stoney Orton, Terry Orton, Jeff Triplitt, Roscoe Williams and Brian Phelps.
