James “ Jim” E. Mullens, age 90, of Columbia, passed away on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at NHC Hillview, in Columbia.
Jim was born on June 14, 1926 in Putnam County, West Virginia to Eugene and Cenia Short Mullens. He served honorably in the United States Army during World War II from January, 1945 until November, 1946. His service inspiring his children and grandchildren to pursue careers in military service. He was married to Lillia May Burton on November 1, 1949 and they were together until her passing. He retired after a career as an assembly worker with Chrysler Corporation. He was a 33rd Degree Mason and a member of the American Legion Herbert Griffin Post 19. Being a Christian, he was a member of Loyal Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.
Jim is survived by his daughter: MSgt. Terry Mullens Hutmacher, USAF Ret. of Syracuse, Utah; son-in-law: MSgt. Kenneth Wayne Hutmacher, USAF Ret. of Syracuse, Utah; granddaughter: SSgt. Kathryn Elizabeth Mullens Hutmacher, USAF and her husband, SSgt Nathan McGreal, USAF both of Osan AB, South Korea; and grandson: Andrew James Mullens Hutmacher of Aurora, CO. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his daughters: Beverly Sue Mann and Brenda Carol Mullens.
Graveside services for Mr. Mullens will be held on Tuesday, September 27, at 2:00 p.m. in the Arbors at Polk Memorial Gardens with Bro. Steve Swango and Bro. William Owens officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19 and a Masonic service will be conducted by the Columbia Lodge #31.
