James William McClure departed this life at age 87 on Friday, January 27, 2023, at his home, in the care of his children. He was born in Giles County, Tennessee to the late James D. McClure and Beatrice McMillan Abernathy.
James will be remembered by most who knew him as a calm, quiet, warm, hard-working, and generous man. He was all those things, and more.
He worked hard all his life, starting in boyhood. His work ethic won him two promotions during his three-year stint in the army, a promotion to purchasing agent during his years at MC West, and a position as a senior buyer for AVCO Aerostructures after leaving West. James’ honesty, integrity, dedication, and talent for relationship-building made him a pleasure to work with. These are the qualities he is remembered for in his ‘retirement’ job as a member of the custodial staff at Brown Elementary School. Faculty, staff, and former students speak highly of him.
James was a man of faith: he served his church as a Sunday School teacher; worshipped God through his consistent study of the Word; and served God through his service to family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers.
James loved hunting, fishing, and working outdoors. He shared those loves as a volunteer with the Boy Scouts and outings with family and friends to hunt, fish, and cut wood. His mischievous side came out in the woods, and the fun he brought is part of what made those trips special.
Another of James’ loves was grilling. After purchasing his first Weber kettle, James claimed he could cook a better turkey on the grill than could be cooked in the oven. His claim was put to the test one Thanksgiving when the oven went out. A Grill Master was born! His family enjoyed his grilling on regular days and holidays through Christmas 2022.
To his children, James is ‘father’ in the very best sense of the word. His consistent and unconditional love, support, encouragement, humor, and willingness to listen ground our lives and set a high standard for who we want to be in our hearts and how we carry ourselves in the world.
James is survived by his children: Nikki (Rodney) Johnson of KS, Stephanie McClure of AL, and James F McClure of CA; grandchildren; Clarissa Johnson, Victoria Johnson Reigier, and Evan James William McClure; great-granddaughter Zoë Regier, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. James is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary E. Dale.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 31 from 4-6 pm, and a 6 pm memorial service will follow.
