James Larry Holden, age 79, passed away peacefully surrounded by family Saturday, May 2, 2020 in Mt. Pleasant, TN.
Larry was born May 9, 1941 to the late William Holden, Sr. and Vola Geneva Gilliam Holden in the Mt. Pleasant area where he raised his family and lived out his life. He left for only a short time on a football scholarship playing for MTSU. He missed home and decided to come home and work. Work defined much of Larry’s life. He was an extremely hard-working man. Over his life he has farmed, worked with Stauffer Chemical for over 12 years and was the Super Intendant for Public Works of Mt. Pleasant for over 30 years. His hardworking nature continued even after he would clock out. His hobbies were still labors of love. He enjoyed operating his farm as well as rebuilding and showing antique cars. Larry spent years with his son Mike rebuilding a 1929 Ford Model A and 1924 Nash. He loved the cars, but nothing compares to the time spent accomplishing a difficult task with someone you love. Larry was a long-time member of Highland Church of Christ. Larry’s family described him as a proud, honest, caring hardworking, straight forward, good Christian man. Which makes sense why his son Mike remembered these words that Larry would always say: “If I can’t tell you to your face I certainly won’t to your back.” Remember these words and if you knew Larry carry them with you. Larry is loved and will be dearly missed.
Larry is survived by his wife: Doyce Holden; son: Mike (Lydia) Holden; grandchildren: Tabitha Ann Clifton, Joseph (Cassie) Robert Holden, Sabrina Marie McGee, Bret Michael Holden, and Paige (Cody) Powell; 18 great grandchildren: and brother: Joe (Carol) Herman Holden. Larry is preceded in death by his great granddaughter Evelyn Reese Powell and brother William Bryant Jr.
Pallbearers will be Joseph Holden, Bret Holden, Randy Holden, William Holden, Cody Powell, and Bob Thurman.
Honorary Pallbearers are Willie Norwood, Skylar Magee, Dr. Cummins Couch, Dr. Kevin Michael Maquiling, Dr. Hany Rezk, and friends of Highland Church of Christ.
