James E. Nelson

Mr. James E. "Jim" Nelson, age 70, a resident of Old Hickory, TN and former resident of Columbia, passed away on Friday, March 21 at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville.

Funeral services for Mr. Nelson will be conducted Tuesday at 10:00 A.M. at the Hermitage Hills Baptist Church in Hermitage, TN with Rev. Keith Smyser officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. at Polk Memorial Gardens.

The family will visit with friends on Monday from 2:00 – 5:00 and 6:30 – 9:00 P.M. at the church.

Williams Funeral Home in Columbia is in charge of arrangements.

The Martin, TN, native was the son of the late Marvin E. Nelson and Clara Starkey Nelson. He was the husband of Geraldine White Nelson of Old Hickory, whom he married on September 22, 1956. Mr. Nelson worked as a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier in Columbia for 25 years before his retirement. He was an active member of the Hermitage Hills Baptist Church. He was also an active member of the Murfreesboro Road Civitan Club, Valley District Civitan and Civitan International Medallion for over 25 years with many honors as President, Governor Elect and Governor.

In his free time, Mr. Nelson enjoyed woodworking and devoted many hours of service to the construction of wheel chair ramps with his fellow Civitan members at the homes of those in need.

Survivors in addition to his wife include his children: James Daniel Becky Nelson of Coppell, TX, Connie David Thomas of Old Hickory and Teresa Diane Nelson of Columbia; one sister: Anna VanMaren of Columbia and one brother: Robert L. Nelson of Lansing, MI; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Murfreesboro Road Civitan Club Wheel Chair Project at 2603 Sandy Drive, Nashville, TN 37216.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Whisenant Sunday School Class of the Hermitage Hills Baptist Church and members of the Murfreesboro Road Civitan Club.
