James Douglas Cates, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on September 17, 2023. Born on June 12, 1943, to the late Homer and Louella Cates in Maury County, Tennessee, James cherished his 55-year marriage to the love of his life, Ruby Dean Agent Cates.
James leaves behind a lasting legacy in the hearts of his daughters, Sherry Wallace and Carol Burns, along with his adoring grandchildren: Brandi (Brad) Skinner, Travis Darryl Cates, Matthew Justin Wallace, and Cory Alan Burns. He also leaves behind eight beautiful great-grandchildren and a vast circle of friends.
A hardworking and genuine man, James was devoted to his family. He relished spending quality time and creating cherished memories with his grandchildren, especially those carefree days by the creek and the unforgettable pizza nights on weekends. One of James's greatest passions in life was wrestling. He was an avid fan who eagerly ordered wrestling matches on pay-per-view and gathered friends and family to watch them, sharing countless memorable moments until the time of his passing.
James's love for his wife Ruby was unparalleled, and their inseparable bond continued even after her passing in 2020.
In addition to Ruby, James is preceded in death by his siblings: Lorene Cates, Paul Cates, Lonnie B. Cates, and Betty Martin. His dedication to the Moon Pencil Company as a Machine Setup Technician for over 35 years reflects his commitment and strong work ethic.
James Douglas Cates will be remembered for his unwavering love for family, his enduring marriage, and the joy he found in simple moments with loved ones. He leaves a legacy of love, hard work, and cherished memories that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family will receive friends and visitors on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with service beginning at 2:00 PM. To follow, Mr. James will be laid to rest at Sunset Park Cemetery in Lewisburg, Tennessee.
